as a part of our study break from midterms, a group of us headed to stadio olimpico yesterday for the a.s. roma vs. catania game. wearing the requisite maroon and gold, we arrived expecting chaos, madness, and the possibility of returning home maimed and battered. but alas, due to new regulations only residents of the lazio region and foreigners were allowed to buy tickets, so hardly any fans from the opposing side were even there.
luckily, we were strategically placed directly across from the roma section, allowing us a show better than the game itself. one thing about italians, they love their teams just about as much as they love their children. the flags didn't stop waving and the chants didn't stop roaring for the full 90 minutes of the game, and i haven't seen a more genuine display of affection since i've been here than the embrace of the couple in front of me when roma scored.
it was a fun little distraction and a telling glimpse into the culture, but unfortunately i have to occupy myself with more enthralling things, like my art history textbook. did you know they actually expect you to study while studying abroad? because it's news to me.
