i am eternally in need of an activity to keep myself busy, so when i found this chair hiding in the basement, it looked less like a forgotten piece of furniture and more like my next victim.
i've been going through a weird chevron phase lately. maybe it relates to my constant lament that my wardrobe is overflowing with solids but i never have enough patterns. or maybe it's because every design magazine is full of decor covered with these inverted V shapes. regardless, since my dream of painting my walls in the zigzag pattern wasn't going to happen any time soon, i decided to compromise with something a little smaller in scale.
once i cleaned off the chair, i sanded it a bit to even out the surface. this step is probably not necessary, especially if you are using furniture that hasn't been finished or painted before, however it made me feel like bob vila so i went for it.
next, i painted the whole surface of the chair a base color. once dry, i used painters tape to create the chevron pattern. using an object with a triangular end as a template makes this process go MUCH faster. it comes highly recommended by yours truly.
once the surface is completely taped in the desired pattern, paint over the surface with an accent color.
when the second layer of paint dried, i removed the tape and then used a black paint pen to outline parts of the chevrons. it is not a necessary step, but it makes for more of a 3D effect.
lastly, i used a small paintbrush to clean up the edges and give the chair a more finished look.
as simple as that!
Cassie, This looks great! You have more patience then me to do all that taping but the end result looks worth it! How long did this take you? Jenna
ReplyDeleteThank you! It took a few hours, but I spread it out over the course of a weekend so I wouldn't lose my mind...but yes, definitely worth it! xox
